Work 8 bars/measures at a time.
This gives enough room for developing longer chord progressions.
Keep the beat going!
Loop the beat or click continuously, rather than stopping after each recording. This helps with keeping the energy level and allowing the creativity to flow more spontaneously.
Keep It Moving!
Move with your music and transfer your movement into your beats. Motion is a critical part of music. I have learned that if the music I make MOVES me, then it is sure to move someone else, somewhere in the world. With that in mind, I put my movement/motion and e-motions into every beat/track/song I make.
Always record!
Even though I did not record the piano performance in Reason, I did capture the spontaneous performance in the video. The important thing to remember is that creativity and spontaneous activity go together. Always expect ideas to come when you are not ready! If you have a smartphone, use the camera or a voice recording app to capture what comes to you.
Sing or hum what you hear in your head.
Not saying you have to be perfect, but practice using your voice to express what is in your mind. Something special happens when your vocal vibrations move through your head and body while thinking and moving and creating. I'm no expert, but when you are engaging more of your body and senses in the creative process, you become more creative.
The Story
I'm always talking about how music is a journey. More specifically, I talk about how music is a "lane" in my life journey. My life journey, so far, has been epic, but the story is far from complete.
"Just Play" is a piano freestyle (improvisation) that I did not record in Reason. So, the only recording of the piano performance is within the video.
