Faith, Fitness, and Manhood - Every Champion Trains Three Ways
Building the Body, Mind, and Spirit God Gave You

by Coach T (Taurus M. James)

There was a time when I thought becoming a man meant becoming stronger than everyone else.

Lift more.

Run faster.

Never show weakness.

Like many young men, I believed physical strength was the answer.

Then life humbled me.

Years ago, I began losing my eyesight. At first, I fought it. I wanted life to go back to the way it was. But through that journey, God taught me something a weight room never could.

Physical strength alone won't carry you through suffering.

You need spiritual strength.

You need mental endurance.

You need hope rooted in Someone greater than yourself.

That season changed the way I think about training forever.

Now, whether I'm speaking at JAM Camp, mentoring young men, or encouraging athletes, I teach one simple truth:

Every champion trains three ways.

Most people train their body.

Some train their body and mind.

But a godly man trains his body, mind, and spirit because every part of his life belongs to God.

That is where true manhood begins.

Your Identity Comes Before Your Training

Before you become stronger...

Become grounded.

One of the greatest mistakes young men make is building their identity around what they can do instead of whose they are.

Sports end.

Championships fade.

Muscles shrink.

Titles change.

Your identity in Christ never changes.

When you know who you are in Christ, you stop chasing acceptance because you've already been accepted. You stop trying to prove your worth because Christ has already declared your value.

Everything else flows from there.

Train from your identity—not for your identity.

Train Your Spirit First

The strongest man in the room isn't always the strongest man in life.

Jesus modeled a life of intentional spiritual discipline.

He prayed.

He fasted.

He withdrew from the crowds.

He listened to His Father.

Then He served others.

Paul reminded Timothy,

"For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come."
—1 Timothy 4:8

Your spiritual life is your foundation.

Without it, everything else eventually cracks.

Feed your spirit every day through:

  • Scripture
  • Prayer
  • Worship
  • Gratitude
  • Quiet time with God

A strong spirit gives direction to everything else.

Train Your Mind

The greatest battles you'll ever fight won't happen on a field.

They'll happen between your ears.

Every day you're choosing which voice you'll believe.

Fear...

Pride...

Comparison...

Anger...

Or the voice of God.

Guard your thoughts.

Develop wisdom.

Learn emotional maturity.

Practice self-control.

Choose humility.

A disciplined mind produces a disciplined life.

As I often tell the young men at JAM Camp:

A man manages his mind before he manages anything else.

Train Your Body

Your body is not your identity.

It is your responsibility.

Scripture reminds us that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit.

Train because you've been entrusted with your body - not because you're trying to impress someone.

Your goal isn't perfection.

Your goal is stewardship.

Start where you are.

You don't need an expensive gym membership.

Create your own Home Court.

Maybe it's a garage.

A basement.

A spare bedroom.

A corner of your apartment.

Wherever it is, make it a place where discipline grows.

Keep it simple:

  • Resistance bands or dumbbells
  • A Bible
  • A journal
  • Water
  • Music that points your heart toward truth
  • Space to move

You don't need perfect equipment.

You need consistent effort.

Train Your Relationships

Nobody becomes a godly man alone.

We all need people who will encourage us, correct us, and remind us of who we are.

Find brothers who will:

  • Challenge your excuses
  • Celebrate your victories
  • Pray with you
  • Tell you the truth
  • Walk beside you

Iron sharpens iron because neither piece of iron was meant to stay alone.

Strength grows in community.

Manage You

At JAM Camp, one lesson keeps showing up year after year.

A man manages:

  • His mind
  • His body
  • His time
  • His space

If you cannot manage yourself, you won't be ready to lead others.

Leadership always begins with self-leadership.

Before God asks you to lead a family...

Lead yourself.

Before He asks you to influence a community...

Learn to manage your own life with humility and discipline.

Fuel Your Growth

Healthy growth requires healthy fuel.

Feed your body with:

  • Lean protein
  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Water
  • Quality sleep
  • Recovery

Feed your mind with:

  • Truth
  • Wisdom
  • Good books
  • Encouraging conversations

Feed your spirit with:

  • God's Word
  • Prayer
  • Worship
  • Fellowship

Whatever you feed grows stronger.

Rest Like a Champion

Many young men think rest is weakness.

Scripture teaches the opposite.

God rested after creation.

Jesus regularly withdrew to quiet places.

Elijah needed sleep before his next assignment.

Rest isn't quitting.

Rest is preparation.

Recovery allows your body, mind, and spirit to grow stronger.

Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is sleep.

Train Like a King

If you're wondering where to begin, start here.

Every morning:

  • Pray for five minutes.
  • Read one chapter of Scripture.
  • Complete a 15–20 minute workout.
  • Write one sentence in a journal.
  • Encourage one person.

Every evening:

  • Reflect on your day.
  • Thank God for His faithfulness.
  • Admit where you fell short.
  • Prepare for tomorrow.

Small disciplines repeated daily become extraordinary character over time.

The End Game

One day your speed will slow.

Your vertical jump will disappear.

Your muscles will fade.

But your character will remain.

Don't spend your life building a body that time will eventually take.

Build a man that eternity will never erase.

Live from your identity in Christ.

Train your spirit.

Strengthen your mind.

Steward your body.

Lead with humility.

Love people well.

Honor God in everything you do.

That's what real manhood looks like.

That's what I want for every young man I have the privilege to coach.

That's what I hope you become.

Live in Peace.

Live in Power.
