Better Is One Day by Darwin Hobbs
A "sample-flip" beat is sampled music in which part of an existing song is used to create a new/different song.
"In music, sampling is the act of taking a portion, or sample, of one sound recording and reusing it as an instrument or a sound recording in a different song or piece." - wikipedia
To "flip" a sample means that a person "slices" or "chops", rearranges or otherwise manipulates the original creatively to use it to construct a new song. The flipped sample(s) may or may not be recognizable in the new song.
In my sample flip beat "Better", the samples of the original Darwin Hobbs song "Better Is One Day" is still recognizable in the new song. However, I add a considerable amount of original instrumentation, including piano, horns and strings, in order to move completely away from the original music genre and style.
I started sampling as a method of music production after listening and watching some of my favorite music producers and beatmakers. Starting out, I quickly learned that creating sample-flip beats is not as easy as it appears.
Many different skills are necessary for a person to be able to create good sample-flip beats. The listening and timing skills of a DJ are needed along with the musical understanding of a musician. In order to make "great" sample-flip beats, the above skills must be present along with engineering skills, patience and discipline.
My journey in making Moody instruMental Music continues to include sampled music along with my original compositions. While I continue to be amazed and humbled at what I come up with, I tend to get the most enjoyment out of making sample-flip beats. So much feel is involved, plus I get to work with original songs that I really enjoy, it make the whole process a lot of fun.
