Coach T's Opening
Gentlemen,
Welcome to JAM Camp.
For the next few days we're going to talk about Jesus, Athletics, and Manhood.
We're going to compete.
We're going to learn.
We're going to grow.
We're going to challenge one another.
But most importantly, we're going to discover who God created us to be.
This year's theme is simple:
Be Great Because God Is Great.
Notice what it doesn't say.
It doesn't say be great because you're talented.
It doesn't say be great because you're athletic.
It doesn't say be great because people like you.
It says be great because God is great.
Our greatness begins with Him.
Everything good in us comes from Him.
Every gift, every opportunity, every ability, every breath comes from Him.
When we understand that, we stop chasing attention and start pursuing purpose.
What Is Greatness?
Many people think greatness is about winning.
Winning matters.
Competing matters.
Working hard matters.
But greatness is bigger than a scoreboard.
A great athlete shows discipline.
A great student shows responsibility.
A great son shows respect.
A great leader serves others.
A great man does the right thing when nobody is watching.
God's definition of greatness starts on the inside before it shows up on the outside.
The Manhood Theme:
Manage You
This year our manhood theme is:
A Man Manages His Mind, His Body, His Time, and His Space.
Before you can lead others, you must learn to lead yourself.
Before you can manage a team, you must learn to manage yourself.
Before you can change the world, you must learn to take responsibility for your own life.
A Man Manages His Mind
Your thoughts shape your actions.
What you think about becomes who you become.
The world is constantly fighting for your attention.
Social media.
Peer pressure.
Fear.
Negativity.
Doubt.
A man learns to guard his mind.
He fills it with truth.
He studies God's Word.
He learns to think differently.
A Man Manages His Body
As athletes, we understand this.
Your body is a gift from God.
How you train matters.
How you eat matters.
How you rest matters.
How you treat your body matters.
Discipline in athletics teaches discipline in life.
The habits you build now will follow you into adulthood.
A Man Manages His Time
Everybody gets 24 hours.
The difference between average and excellent is often how time is used.
Great men understand priorities.
They do important things before convenient things.
They understand that every day is an opportunity to grow.
A Man Manages His Space
Your environment affects your mindset.
Your room.
Your locker.
Your friendships.
Your digital space.
Your habits.
A man takes ownership of what God has entrusted to him.
Order creates opportunity.
Responsibility creates trust.
Excellence in All We Do
One lesson I learned at the United States Air Force Academy was excellence in all we do.
I learned discipline.
I learned standards.
I learned accountability.
Those lessons were valuable.
But when I became a follower of Christ, I discovered something deeper.
I learned how to align my mind, body, time, and purpose under God's leadership.
Excellence becomes more meaningful when it is connected to God's purpose.
Excellence is not perfection.
Excellence is giving God your best.
Greatness Is For Others
One of the biggest mistakes people make is thinking greatness is all about themselves.
God never intended greatness to stop with you.
Your gifts are meant to serve others.
Your influence is meant to help others.
Your success should create opportunities for others.
That's why one of my life missions is:
Helping Other People Elevate.
Every person you encourage.
Every teammate you support.
Every younger athlete you mentor.
Every friend you help.
That's greatness.
When God blesses you, He wants you to become a blessing.
God's Blueprint for Greatness
Ephesians 2:10 tells us that we are God's workmanship.
That means you are not an accident.
You were created on purpose.
With purpose.
For purpose.
God has already placed gifts, talents, and potential inside of you.
Your responsibility is to develop them.
Athletes train their bodies.
Followers of Christ train their character.
Great men develop both.
Challenge
As you leave this session, ask yourself four questions:
-
Am I managing my mind well?
-
Am I managing my body well?
-
Am I managing my time well?
-
Am I managing my space well?
The answers to those questions will reveal the direction of your life.
Greatness starts with responsibility.
Greatness starts with discipline.
Greatness starts with obedience.
Greatness starts with God.
Closing
Gentlemen,
God is great.
Because He is great, you have the opportunity to pursue greatness.
Not for your glory.
Not for attention.
Not for applause.
But to honor God and serve others.
So as you compete this week...
Train hard.
Learn well.
Lead courageously.
Serve faithfully.
Manage yourself.
Help others elevate.
And remember:
Be Great Because God Is Great.
Grace and Peace,
Coach T
