Mercy Is The Only Way Out

I was listening to music while writing code/programming and this song came one and totally gripped my heart.

Andra Day's voice is amazing and the music's irregular nature drew me into the depths of the lyrics.

It's like Andra Day is speaking to me and speaking for me at the same time in this song when she sings...

I can't hear love 'cause we're at war
And revenge is so loud and the drums are so proud
But oh, I'm in a cage and I hear mercy say "I'm here now"
And it's the only way out
(I can't hear love 'cause we're at war)
But revenge is so loud and the drums are so proud
But I'm still in a cage and I hear mercy say now
It's the only way out

Props to the writers, Cassandra Monique Batie and Dave Wood.

Powerful, amazing, awesome song.

I started doing piano freestyles over popular music a few years ago as a way to train my ears and improve my ability to play by ear. This time, I'm playing along with Mobb Deep - Shook Ones Part II.

This is just something I do to have fun and work on my ear training. I am not a pianist at all and I don't know how to play piano like a pianist. I just try to make the keys play what I hear in my head.

Moody Instrumental Music by Taurus M. James Sampled Music, Remixes and Cover Songs

"Better" is a sampled hip-hop beat that I created after listening to "Better Is One Day" by Darwin Hobbs. I had been listening to "Better Is One Day" for years. It is a great track to worship to. The beautiful musicianship really comes through and that is what I wanted to highlight in my track.

Is this a REMIX?

re·mix

verb - rēˈmiks/ - mix (something) again.

noun - ˈrēmiks/ - a different version of a musical recording produced by remixing.

image for How to Make Beats Laying Down Basic Music Ideas

How to Make Beats Laying Down Basic Music Ideas

I like to make Moody Instrumental Music on Saturday mornings. Sometimes, I start out the morning with playing around on the keyboard until I play a chord or melody that catches me and inspires me to develop more of a song. I call this my exploration and discovery process for making music.

Since I don't start with any musical pieces in my head (the way I normally do), I just make time to "explore" and "discover" music using this method. Rather than try to develop entire song ideas using this method, I just try to get the basic parts - the "foundation" - of a song captured in Propellerhead Reason. This way, I can always come back to the track later and develop it.

In this video, watch how I start out with two very basic 4-note piano chords and build a basic song idea. The bass and drums are added to the piano to create a "chill" song idea - something to lounge to on a nice Saturday morning.

The end of the video catches some of my improvisation on the basic idea. Usually, when I improv or "freestyle" on the track (with the piano) I can develop a real feel for the song idea, making it easier to build a complete song later.

image for How to Make Beats Wrapping the Samples in Sample Flip Beats Remixes

How to Make Beats Wrapping the Samples in Sample Flip Beats Remixes

When I make Moody Instrumental Music, sometimes I "sample" or use parts from an existing song or musical piece. My goal in sampling is to take parts from a piece that I love and build a completely different musical piece that leaves the listener saying, "WOW, you got that result from those sampled pieces?!"

The way I do this is by "wrapping" (not rapping) the sample with my own instrumentation. I create different musical patterns with the sampled pieces (called "flipping the sample"). While I flip the samples, I can hear (in my head) all of the instrumentation that I want to wrap the sample pieces in. When i finish the sample flip patterns, I go back and create the instrumentation that I heard (in my head).

In this video, watch how I make a sample flip beat and instrumental music using Propellerhead's Reason software, the Akai MPD32 and the Yamaha DJX MIDI keyboard. This video takes you into my thought process about sampling, "chopping and flipping" samples, and I give you tips on how to make music.

This video catches me on one of my "happier" days, in which my overall "moody-ness" level was low. Plus, I had just finished downing a can of Mountain Dew. So, I'm a bit more animated in this video.

This is one of my piano freestyle videos. This is what I do to train my ear and develop keyboarding skills.

One of the most rewarding things for me when I make Moody Instrumental Music is what I call the "learning journey." I didn't start out knowing how to make beats, produce music, play piano or keyboard, use Propellerhead Reasonn, use the Akai MPD32, record videos, or create beautiful music from the rough ideas in my head. My "learning journey" is what has allowed me to do all of what I do musically. The journey has been long - more than a decade now - but my music clearly prooves that the journey is worth it.

Why I Make Moody Instrumental Musicc

Why I Make Moody Instrumental Music - Testimony by TaurusBeats aka Taurus M. James

In 1997, I was following the teachings of Elijah Muhammad and Minister Louis Farrakhan, striving to be the best I could be in the Nation of Islam. One night, I prayed to God to, "Tell me what I am missing".

I was broke, bitter, angry and depressed. I wanted Him to tell me why my life was so messed up. I knew there was more to life - more to my life, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't make my life better.

The next morning, I awoke saying, "Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Jesus Christ is the Son of God!" I was sitting straight up in my bed by the third time I spoke these words.
