SAHD Life: Being a Strong-And-Healthy-Dad

I get these "google alerts" every day, which are basically just articles and posts from around the web related to certain keywords I want to monitor. "SAHD" and "Stay At Home Dad" are keywords I monitor and I have been getting a great deal of posts lately.

Taekwondo Speed Training

Don't laugh, but I just recently started Taekwondo (TKD) at age 40. I remember growing up watching Jhoon Rhee commercials and wanting to join a karate class, but we just didn't have the money. There I was at 10 years old watching kung fu theater on Saturday mornings and I would see these commercials pop up. "Nobody bothers me" was the tagline that stuck in my head.

Skip ahead some 30 years and now I have my own daughter and it's the first time I walk into a Taekwondo  class. In the beginning, it was all about my daughter learning TKD, getting discipline, learning respect and all that. But while I was watching her in class, I started thinking, "it will be cool to actually do the class with her." So, a few months after we arrived in Oklahoma, I began my first Taekwondo class. Yep, at 40 years old.

Finished My First Official 5K Race - Run Lucky 5K in OKC

I started running back in the Fall of 2011. My wife runs marathons and half marathons, and she had been trying to get me to run for quite some time. I figured that I'll never do a marathon, but the 5K was doable. When I found out that her dad and brother had started running to train for races, I thought that would be a cool challenge.

I thought the Run Lucky 5K was going to be a rainy, miserable race this year. But the rains stopped in time. The weather was perfect for running at just under 50 degrees and cloudy enough to keep away the sun's heat. Here are my official 5K race results.

Official results:

  • Overall finish: 151/606
  • Age Division finish: 16/61 (40)
  • Gun Time: 25:27
  • Pace: 5:06
  • Chip Time: 24:37
  • Bib #: 1033

Signed Up For My First 5K - Run Lucky 5K

I registered for the Run Lucky 5K today. My first official race! I'm pretty excited about it.

My wife finally got me into running and I'm starting to enjoy it a lot more. I do most of my running on the treadmill, but I do get outside every now and then to run with my wife.

The race is Sunday, March 11th at 2PM.

5K Training Running Activity 5 miles

I hit the treadmill around 12:40 this afternoon, for the first time in more than a week. I ended up running my fastest time yet for the 5K - 26:21.

Yep, I'm still running with Outcast playing in my Sansa MP3 player. I finally made a playlist of the best songs for running.

Today's total time was 51 minutes total and I finished 5 miles altogether - 4 miles running and 1 mile walking.

I felt good overall and I'm starting to feel comfortable with the faster pace.

My First Taekwondo Competition in McPherson, Kansas

Well, I should say OUR first TKD competition, since the whole family competed. We had a good time. Tamilyn received a medal for "Best Kicks" in the Tiny Tigers division. I received a medal for second place in Forms.

The drive was nice - about 3 hours and 30 minutes to get to McPherson from Edmond, OK. We ran into some rain in Kansas, but nothing bad.

I didn't know much about McPherson before this competition - and I still don't. It's a small town with most of the attraction just off of the interstate exit. Now that I know where it is, I'll go back to compete in another TKD competition.

5K Training Running Activity 3.26 miles

I hit the treadmill around 2:10 this afternoon, not really expecting to finish my run because of not feeling well yesterday. But I ended up running my fastest time for the 5K distance so far - 27:47.

I still run with Outcast playing in my Sansa player. The earlier albums are perfect for my pace.

Today's run time was 30 minutes total and I finished 3.26 miles. Overall, it was a good run. I have to change my heart monitor's "high" zone to be 185 instead of 180. I stayed around 160 for the first 2 miles and then hovered around 176 for the last mile. At the very end of the run, I hit 180 a couple of times because I was changing from shorter to longer strides.

Next run planned for Saturday. I'm going for 5 miles.

5K Training Running Activity 4.10 miles

I ran with my wife, Trauna, today and did 4.1 miles. I ran 2.11 miles before starting intervals (run/walk). The run was good overall, but I have to watch my pace. I got to a 9 minute/mile pace on mile 2 - too fast.

I finished my first outdoor run with my wife, Trauna, and our friend Rosalyn. We ran a route in the park near the Shakespeare theater in Montgomery, AL.

5K Training Running Activity 3.88 miles

We did intervals - 2 minutes running : 1 minute walking. It was a good start for my outdoor training and I felt like I could do more miles.
